Is Your Project Starting to Drift?

How to identify the warning signs before project drift turns into a crisis.

A project does not turn red overnight

Problems usually emerge gradually: deadlines start slipping, costs increase, risks accumulate, teams come under pressure and customer confidence begins to erode.

Taken individually, each signal may seem manageable. Taken together, they can reveal a different reality: the project is starting to lose control.

Indicators show symptoms. Not always the causes.

Project management tools, KPIs and dashboards are essential for effective project control. But they cannot replace a deep understanding of the root causes behind project difficulties.

An indicator can only be truly trusted when the foundations on which it is built are robust.

A perfectly presented schedule provides limited value if the project structure behind it is weak. A risk register is useful only if risks are genuinely identified, assessed and managed. And a green dashboard does not necessarily mean that a project is under control.

The QPInsight diagnostic: looking behind the numbers

Before launching additional corrective actions, we first seek to understand why the project is drifting.

Our diagnostic is structured around 5 complementary areas:

1. Contract & Commitments - Are objectives, deliverables, milestones and customer commitments clearly defined and controlled?

2. Organisation & Governance - Do responsibilities, interfaces and decision-making processes support effective project control?

3. Project Structure - Do the WBS, OBS, CBS and schedule provide a coherent and actionable representation of the project?

4. Monitoring, Control & Quality - Do indicators detect deviations early enough to trigger the right actions?

5. Team Management - Are priorities understood, responsibilities owned and the team genuinely mobilised?

The objective is not to add another tool or another reporting layer. It is to move from symptoms to root causes - and from diagnosis to recovery.
